Whalen to speak Sunday on Genocide following services at Guilford Church
GUILFORD -- Having just returned to Vermont after five years at the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina War Crimes Tribunal, Patricia Whalen will offer her reflections at the third of the Lenten Series at Guilford Community Church on Sunday, March 3, beginning at 11:30 a.m.
Appointed to that position in 2007 and having tried some of the most heinous criminals in the genocide there, she will talk about the role of hate and bigotry in genocide and the power of choice in confronting or accepting evil. The session, to be held after the church service in the Houghton Room, will feature slides as well as her presentation and time for questions and discussions and will end at 1 p.m.
A simple soup and bread lunch will be provided for those present. Other Lenten offerings include Wednesday Meditations from 4 to 5 p.m. in the sanctuary and the Prayer Shawl Ministry which takes place at the same time. Everyone is welcome to all events.
Sunday’s church service, which begins at 10 a.m. will include holy communion, and will feature reflections on prayer and other responses to evil in our time. The scripture is taken from Ephesians 6:10-20 and Matthew 6:5-13 and the children’s story will feature the man in Mark 10 who found it difficult to give up wealth in exchange for spiritual treasure.
The choir under the direction of Tony Barrand will offer two anthems, "Shut The Door, Keep Out the Devil," a spiritual from African American tradition, and "I Need You to Survive" by Hezekiah Walker. Anyone wanting to sing with the choir should come by 9 a.m. The confirmation class meets with the pastor before church beginning at 9 a.m. and all children from nursery to grade 8 have Sunday School during the service.
Guilford Community Church is an Open and Affirming Congregation of the United Church of Christ and is fully handicapped accessible. An ASL interpreter and hearing assistance is provided.
