Wilmington downtown promotions begin

WILMINGTON >> Downtown organization Wilmington Works is hoping to get more families to spend time in the village this winter.

"Individual businesses are contributing to the downtown promotion by offering specials, in-store events, give-aways and raffle prizes," said Anna Drozdowski, the group's executive director. "Wilmington Works is also grateful for support from the Town Events Fund."

That fund, which holds some of Wilmington's 1 percent local option tax revenue, assisted in producing promotions called the Apres Ski After 3 and Spot the Snowman. Also worth noting is the town's committing an annual $30,000 for the organization's operating budget for fiscal years 2017, 2018 and 2019. The Selectboard approved the funding during budget talks this year.

Wilmington Works Board Co-Chairwoman Lisa Sullivan said her downtown store Bartleby's Books was busy for most of the holiday week between Christmas and New Years. While weekends were steady, more snow would have helped business in January. She's looking forward to a busy President's Week.

Starting Feb. 13 at 3 p.m. on Saturdays, downtown shops will offer snacks, discounts and entertainment throughout the winter season. The promotion will continue until March 12.

"Some will be announced in advance and some you'll have to show up to see the surprise offerings," a press release stated.

The second annual "Galentine's Day" event at Bartleby's Books on Feb. 13 will kick off the festivities. Sullivan said the idea was inspired by comedian Amy Poehler as "a fun time to kick it with your gals." Attendees can expect a waffle cupcake bar, trivia contest, photo booth and "snazzy" decorations.

The hunt for snowmen will see Apres Ski Passes stamped as their holders find snowmen hidden in shops downtown. After collecting at least 12 stamps, the pass can be turned in at the Southern Vermont Deerfield Valley Chamber of Commerce for a chance to win prizes each week. Passes can be obtained at the chamber's location at 21 West Main Street in Wilmington.

"Hunt early for multiple chances to win the raffle for prizes, gift certificates and more," Wilmington Works advised.

Raffle drawings will be held Feb. 13, 20, and 27 then March 5 and 12.
