Windham County Humane Society: Walk for Animals set for Sept. 23

Posted
BRATTLEBORO — The Windham County Humane Society will be hosting animals from Florida and Texas in an effort to help the communities affected by hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

"We anticipate getting dogs and cats from Florida and Texas next Thursday, so we look forward to some of those dogs participating in our annual Walk for Animals, and finding a new home" said Executive Director Annie Guion.

Working with long-term transport partner, St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center in New Jersey, the facility plans to take in dogs and cats from Florida and Texas shelters

next week and on through the fall. So far this year, the WCHS has taken in 101 cats and 252 dogs from southern shelters where they face euthanasia due to a lack of space. Now the focus has shifted to animals that have been in shelters in Texas and Florida, so that kennels can be freed up to house animals displaced by the storm. Transporting long-term residents while keeping animals lost during the storm in their home state means owners can be reunited with a lost pet.

The WCHS has an average length of stay of just two weeks for cats, one week for dogs — animals in southern shelters can wait months or even years to find a new home. Spay neuter practices and progressive policies in New England mean most shelters in the Northeast have space to help animals facing euthanasia elsewhere.

To make sure kennels are available, the adult dogs currently at the WCHS have had their adoption fee cut in half, to just $100. The fee includes spay/neuter, microchip, up-to-date vaccines, and I.D. tag, a free vet exam and one month of pet health insurance.

The Walk will take place on Sept. 23, from 9 am to noon, at Grafton Village Cheese, on Route 30 in Brattleboro.

Just $50 in pledges will get walkers a T-shirt and local Blueberry Haus ice cream. Top fundraisers can win great prizes, such as a $250 gift card from Agway, $100 gift card from the Whetstone Station, or an iPod from Brown Computer Solutions. One Stop Country Pet Supply is the event's "Leader of the Pack" sponsor.
