Winter storm dumps snow over region, forcing cancellations around Windham County

BRATTLEBORO -- A winter storm warning remains in effect until midnight, Wednesday, as Winter Storm Ukko continues to dump snow over the region.

The storm is expected to dump close to a foot of heavy snow in some areas, a day before the official start of spring.

At least several inches of snow had fallen in parts of the region early Tuesday. Hundreds of schools were closed.

The forecasts call for 10 to 18 inches around Montpelier, 7 to 11 inches in Concord, N.H., and 5 to 11 inches in Portland, Maine with lesser amounts, 4 to 10 inches, in western Massachusetts and along the coast.

The storm is expected to taper off on Wednesday.

The following cancellations have been reported for Tuesday:

-- Schools in the Windham Southeast, Central and Northeast districts, including: Brattleboro Union High School; Brattleboro Middle School, elementary schools in Brattleboro, Dummerston, Guilford, Putney and Vernon; Bellows Falls Union High School; Bellows Falls Middle School; Bellows Falls Elementary School; Twin Valley Middle and High School; Leland & Gray High School; Leland & Gray Middle School; Westminster and Grafton schools; Deerfield Valley, Whitingham and Halifax elementary; Hinsdale and Winchester schools; Elementary schools in Marlboro, Townshend, Newbrook, Jamaica, Wardsboro and Windham elementaries; Putney Grammar School.
