Wood named pitcher of the week

BRATTLEBORO >> Kayla Wood, who helped the Brattleboro Union High School varsity softball team win three state titles, was named the ECAC Division III New England Pitcher of the Week.

The Castleton University junior had a career week, posting a 3-0 record and a save over four appearances, including her first career no-hitter. Overall on the week, she pitched three complete games, with an 0.78 Earned Run Average and had 30 strikeouts in 18 innings of work, allowing just 10 hits, five walks, and two earned runs.

Wood tossed a five-inning complete game against Lyndon, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out eight batters. The junior then threw a no-hitter against Thomas, as she struck out a career-high 16 batters over seven innings of work for a 7-0 victory. Wood picked up a save in the Spartans' 4-3 win against NEC, as she struck out two batters in an inning of work. To end the week, she tossed another five-inning complete game, striking out four batters, while allowing just one run on five hits.

Prior to going off to Castleton, Wood earned Gatorade Vermont Softball Player of the Year honors in 2013. The 5-foot-5 right-hander led the Colonels to a 13-2-1 record during that regular season. She went 12-2 in the circle, despite a back injury, and had an impressive 0.46 Earned Run Average entering the playoffs. She fanned 166 batters, walked just 16 and allowed 51 hits in 106.2 innings pitched.

The purple and white would go on to capture their third championship in four years.
