Why you should care about global warming

As a concerned citizen I think we should put a stop to global warming. Global warming is when the climate changes and the earth gets hotter, which affects animal life and humanity in terrible ways. Global warming is caused by the increase of gases like methane, carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. I chose this topic because I see people who leave their cars running, don't turn off house lights, and just don't seem to care about the environment. They are releasing these gases into the atmosphere and contributing to global warming.

Global warming is causing icebergs to melt, which causes the sea level to rise, putting people who live on islands and near coastlines at risk. Also, the more gases that go into the atmosphere the quicker global warming takes effect. I care about this topic because the environment is changing and changing people's and animal's ability to survive. These changes include animals not having enough food to eat, heat waves, tornadoes, more severe storms and floods. This is why you should care. What if the glaciers melted completely, the continents would be flooded, and places like New York, Boston, San Francisco, and Hawaii could be underwater. Most of humanity and wildlife in these places would be killed. Right now, glaciers are melting, and these things are starting to happen.

Therefore, I believe that global warming and extreme weather are intertwined. According to The New York Times, "The papers suggest that human-caused climate change greatly increased the likelihood and intensity of heat waves in some regions including Argentina, Europe, China, The Korean Peninsula, Australia and the Northern Atlantic and Pacific oceans." What this quote means is, research papers say that human-caused climate change is intensifying and increasing the likelihood of heat waves in several regions of the world! Furthermore, this is important because, people could get heat stroke, skin cancer or could die of dehydration. Not all places have enough clean water for the people who live there and wells could also dry up. Animals that live in the ocean and other wildlife are dieing because of the increase in temperature, and droughts.

I am going to prove to you that global warming is making it hard for animals and plants to adapt to the climate changes. Down To Earth says, "Climate change is leading to disruptions in the food chain because of change in timings of plant growth or animal life cycles. The food web of the Bering Sea is among them. The walleye pollock, a forage species, has declined due to variations in atmospheric circulation through interactions with ocean currents." This quote shows that a species of fish, that is consumed by birds and larger fish has been dying because of changes in water temperatures and ocean currents because of the change in the atmosphere.

Another fact I found in Down To Earth illustrated that, "The pied flycatcher, a migratory bird, is finding it difficult to forage for food. There has been a 90 percent decline in its population according to a paper published in the May 4 edition of Nature." This information is important because this bird's entire population has been dying from starvation, which means that this bird could go extinct.

I know people might say things to counter my belief by saying, "More than some scientists signed a petition in Oregon saying that there is no convincing evidence to humans release of carbon dioxide, methane or other greenhouse gases" or that, "satellite readings of temperatures in the lower atmosphere say that there is no evidence of global warming since readings began 33 years ago." People also might say that all predictions of global warming are based on computer models and not historical data.

I would respond that humans produce a lot of carbon dioxide, there are also billions of people who produce methane gas for various reasons; it is completely ridiculous to believe this doesn't contribute to climate change. An EPA article states that "Worldwide emissions of greenhouse gases from human activities increased by 35 percent from 1990 to 2010. ... Emissions of carbon dioxide which accounts for about three fourths of total emissions, increased 42 percent over this period. ... Concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere that have increased since the beginning of the industrial era." These facts are important because they prove that humans are producing more and more carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that cause global warming.

In Addition, I strongly believe that global warming is negatively affecting the environment. People are trying to get countries to help stop global warming by signing an agreement with other countries. National Geographic states "The U.S and 194 other countries signed an agreement in Paris to more aggressively counter the changes of climate change." This illustrates that the U.S and 194 other countries agreed with Paris to stop climate change by changing the way energy is produced and consumed, and gradually reducing the reliance on fossil fuels.

This is what you can do to help stop global warming. You can go to and on the top right hand corner of the home page, there is a red rectangle with the word "Donate." You can do a one-time donation or a monthly donation. You can give as much or as little as you want. Enter your information such as, zip code, address, credit card, etc. And click "Donate Now!" To send your donation. One reason you should donate to NRDC is because one of their priorities is to protect western keystone species such as, wolves, buffalo, grizzlies.

Another thing you can do to help is carpool, walk short distances, and turn off your car when you are waiting so the gases don't go into the atmosphere.
