This week, a team of sixth graders from Chesterfield School will be traveling to Knoxville, Tenn., to compete in the Global Finals of Destination ImagiNation, an academic teamwork and problem solving competition. It is a great accomplishment and unique opportunity for these students. Over the last two months the team and their families have been working hard to raise the funding required to attend the competition.

Thanks to the wonderful support of many area families and businesses, we have been able to meet our fundraising goal. The Green Mountain Camp for Girls would like to offer many thanks to the businesses and individuals who have helped us get ready for the 2012 camp season. The ongoing support of local companies and the generous people who work there has made the camp look better than it has in years.

C & S Wholesale Grocers sent a wonderful crew of volunteers to reshingle the dining hall roof on May 12, many of whom helped with the reroofing of our recreational hall in 2010. Jancewicz & Sons donated all the shingles for this project, as they did two years ago. What a difference this made to the camp -- we are so grateful.

C & S also provided food and drink donations for our Open House on May 20, along with True North Granola. These treats helped make prospective campers and their families feel welcome as they toured the camp. One of the sights on the tour was the camp’s bountiful garden, expanded this year with a $250 grant from C & S and the donation of seeds from High Mowing Seeds.

Farnum Cellulose has been a great partner to the camp, most recently insulating the house into which our new camp director, Billie Slade Ognenoff, has just moved. We want to thank Chad Farnum in particular for the endless volunteer hours he has given, as well as Dave Snyder for his treework, Jared Flynn for the contribution of his excavator and Phil Bover for maintaining the camp’s swimming pool. Without the generosity of these folks and many others, Green Mountain Camp wouldn’t be ready to welcome more than 100 campers starting in June.

Finally, we would like to thank Burton Car Wash for collecting contributions to our scholarship fund. The camp is committed to providing a week of camp to any girl who wants to come, and the jar at Burton’s goes a long way to making that possible.

On Sunday, May 20, the Sons of the American Legion Squadron #5 of Brattleboro held a Safety Coffee Break at the Southeastern Vermont Welcome Center in Guilford. Thank you to the Welcome Center and the State of Vermont for giving us this opportunity to raise funds for our organization and the assistance from their employees.

I would like to express a very sincere thank you to the American Legion Auxiliary Unit #5 for their assistance in this project, it was invaluable.

To Commander Guthrie and the Officers and members of Post #5, thank you for letting us borrow tables, chairs, and a coffee pot. Thank you also, for letting us store items at the Post and in the walk-in cooler.

A special thank you to the Brattleboro Food Co-op, Green Mountain Coffee, Leader Beverage, and Mr. G’s Discount Foods who made donations to help make this Coffee Break a reality.

We would like to also thank Mocha Joe’s support of our programs.
