Your Thanks

Editor of the Reformer:

The Red Cross Blood Drive held on April 10, 2013, at the Brattleboro Union High School Multi-Purpose Room was a success. We thank the students and staff who donated the "gift of life," yielding a total of 30 pints and four deferrals. There were 18 first time donors and 12 staff donors.

Thanks to the Windham Regional Career Center Future Business Leaders of America Youth Group for making the arrangements, getting the help necessary for the drawing and having the drive go so smoothly.

Also thanks to the volunteers who worked throughout the day, the Red Cross staff from Manchester, N.H., and the staff from BUHS who assisted and to the students who assisted in various functions during the day. Many thanks to BUHS for allowing the Red Cross the use of the school premises for this drawing.

A big thank you goes out to the following businesses that contributed for our canteen: Bruegger’s Bagels, Dunkin’ Donuts, Domino’s Pizzeria and Subway.

To one and all many thanks for making this a successful drive.

Thanks to the amazing support of the Windham County community, Bowl For Kids’ Sake grossed more than $70,000 on April 6 to support the Big Brothers Big Sisters program at Youth Services. More than 500 fundraisers came out to bowl and gathered pledges of support from thousands around the county and beyond to make this 32nd year celebration the biggest success ever.

As a Big Sister in the program, I can attest to the incredible growth in the self-esteem of my Little Sister over the six years that I’ve been meeting with her. The Big Brothers Big Sisters program makes 200 relationships like mine possible throughout Windham County, and they couldn’t do it without the spirit-filled support of the community at Bowl For Kids’ Sake. Big Brothers Big Sisters is truly "community powered."

Our top corporate sponsors were Brattleboro Subaru, People’s United Bank and Windham Southwest Teachers Association. We’d like to thank these and the other corporate sponsors, prize donors, volunteers, bowlers and those who sponsored a bowler. It really takes generous people from all five groups to make Bowl For Kids’ Sake such a success for kids in our community. Please call Youth Services at (802) 257-0361 for more information about how you or your business can become involved in Big Brothers Big Sisters, or go to

Many thanks to all of you who have been slowing down your driving speed up on Putney Mountain Road these last few days in response to my sign "PLEASE SLOW DOWN SO WE CAN BREATHE." Those of us who live very close to our beautiful dirt roads are experiencing a chokingly high level of dust during this time of sunny days. My allergies have been going crazy and trying to spray down the road in front of our house just isn’t enough. So ... though I try to be outside tipping my hat to as many of you as possible, MANY THANKS FOR YOUR CONSIDERATE DRIVING!
