NEWPORT, Vt. (AP) — A 34-year-old inmate died at the Northern State Correctional Facility in Newport, the Vermont Department of Corrections says.

Prison staff found Michael Cornell, of Newport, in his cell on Saturday morning. Staff began life-saving efforts, and called for outside medical assistance.

Cornell was taken to the North Country Hospital in Newport where he was pronounced dead.

The cause of death will be determined by the Vermont State Medical Examiner, but the department says it is not considered suspicious.

The Department of Corrections says Cornell was sentenced to probation in February 2020. He was incarcerated in February 2021.

Cornell had been at the prison since Feb. 5, 2020. On Saturday he was residing in the quarantine unit after returning from an outside medical appointment.

The Department of Corrections will conduct an internal review of Cornell’s death.

The Vermont State Police and the Prisoners’ Rights Office were both notified of the death. Both entities will conduct separate investigations into the death.
