WEST BRATTLEBORO — A Jeep went up in flames after the driver went inside Cumberland Farms on Marlboro Road.
"It was some type of mechanical failure with the engine," said Lt. Dan Hiner of the Brattleboro Fire Department. "It wasn't on fire when they pulled into the gas station."
Hiner said the vehicle was destroyed in the fire Monday afternoon.
"It set the gas pump suppression system off, which is all the dry powder," he said. "That's why it looked like it was Christmas time up there."
Hiner said the fire was quickly extinguished and under control in about 10 minutes. He said the store closed for cleanup efforts even though the powder was not toxic.
"They have to clean it up and get a fire suppression company in to recharge the gas pump suppression system before they can open again," he said.
Hiner said no one was injured.
