WESTMINSTER WEST — In the picturesque setting of Westminster West, Nancy Calicchio set up a home studio where she works on her landscape oil paintings. Calicchio started her oil painting career 12 years ago when she retired from the education field.

When she retired she was not sure what she was going to do, but always had a love of art.

"I had always loved art, love going to museums, love looking at paintings, was intrigued by it," said Calicchio. "I got started, had some wonderful workshops, and a lot of painting on my own, that I got to where I am today. I feel like I can paint what I see; if I see something that moves me, that is very beautiful in my mind, I have the technical skills now to reach for it."

Calicchio draws her inspiration from the landscape, saying that she finds Vermont to be very beautiful. She grew up on Long Island and moved to the area in 1963. During her time here, she has noticed a lot of changes, some of it positive and other changes telling her that the natural beauty needs to preserved.

Through her artwork she tries to capture the beauty of the changing seasons or the flow of the Connecticut River, to help keep a little bit of that Vermont alive in her work.
