All-New 2022 Toyota Tundra Gets New Hybrid Engine

For the first time in 15 years, Toyota unveiled a new version of its full-size pickup, the 2022 Toyota Tundra. The new Tundra features a new look, new technology, and more power.

The Tundra's power comes courtesy of two new V6 engine configurations. The first (i-Force) is a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6; the second is a hybrid twin-turbo V6 (i-Force Max). There is no V8 option, making Toyota the first major auto manufacturer to offer a full-size truck without an available V8 engine.

Yet, the new Tundra can produce more power than its predecessor, particularly the hybrid version. With an output of 437 horsepower, the hybrid V6 bests the outgoing V8, which had 56 fewer hp. Torque also increases by 45 percent in the hybrid model, to 583 pound-feet. Because its electric motor is integrated with the 10-speed transmission, the hybrid model is also capable of pure electric driving at low speeds.

In addition to the new engine option, the new Tundra also looks different due to a larger front grille, redesigned headlights, and a more rugged body style. On the inside, the 2022 Tundra has an all-new audio/multimedia system and standard Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 in all trim levels. With an available 14-inch touchscreen, the multimedia system features wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and over-the-air updates. The safety suite offers adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam headlights, and lane-centering for semi-autonomous hands-on driving assistance.

The 2022 Toyota Tundra also has increased towing capacity. The standard V6 engine can tow up to 12,000 pounds, while the hybrid version can tow up to 11,500. The truck's maximum payload capacity is 1,940 pounds.

While the EPA has yet to release official fuel-economy figures, the 2022 Tundra should improve the outgoing model's combined 15 mpg.

The 2022 Tundra will go on sale at the end of 2021; pricing hasn't yet been announced. Like its predecessor, the new Tundra will be manufactured at Toyota's San Antonio, TX, assembly plant.
