Editor of the Reformer:

It was with great sadness that I read recent articles about Kurn Hattin.

I am a parent of one alumus of Kurn Hattin and another, soon to be, alumna. I am writing in support of Kurn Hattin and to contrast our experiences at Kurn Hattin with the characterization in the articles.

Our family was in crisis when we first considered sending my son to Kurn Hattin. I was initially against the idea, thinking this would be the start of the disintegration of family. I was wrong. What happened instead was that our family circle grew. My son and our family were accepted, cared for, and loved by the members of the Kurn Hattin family. It has been transformative for my son and our family. Kurn Hattin provided what his parents could not at the time. The compassionate staff at Kurn Hattin gave him and our despairing family hope and confidence that a better future was possible. Today, my son is working his way through the process to become a Vermont State Police Officer. I cannot be prouder as his dad. And, grateful to Kurn Hattin because they made the difference.

One of the core values demonstrated and reinforced at Kurn Hattin is perseverance. Let me tell you, the staff at Kurn Hattin practiced years of perseverance with my daughter. Given her history, they accepted her into Kurn Hattin in spite of her challenging history. I am so grateful. I recall the first year of challenges there and the many conversations, meetings, and trips to Kurn Hattin to problem solve around how best to support and nurture her. They persevered when most others would have given up. Their compassion made the difference. Last spring she was the School Marshall for the seventh grade class due to her outstanding academic performance. She personifies “hope” as she plans for her high school career and beyond. Thank you Kurn Hattin.

Our experience is the antithesis of what was depicted in the stories I saw. Our family has benefited from the Kurn Hattin experience for almost a decade. Not once did I ever have a concern about leaving my children in their care.

I hope that independent investigations address recent allegations and Kurn Hattin’s good name is cleared. I also encourage everyone to take the time to visit their web site and acknowledge the Core Values they exemplify and teach every day to their children.
