Leland & Gray hosts Green Mountain during a varsity girls’ soccer match on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2022.

TOWNSHEND — The Leland & Gray varsity girls soccer team defeated Green Mountain 2-1 in double overtime on Tuesday.

Riley Paul put the Chieftains on the board with 19:34 left in the second half, assisted by Chloe Ayer. Abby Towle would pull the hosts even 13 minutes later on a direct kick, which was the 50th goal of her varsity career.

The winning tally came with 1:22 left in the second overtime. Sam Morse made a beautiful run down the sideline and then crossed the ball toward the net, where Mary Sanderson kicked the ball over the line for her second golden goal of the season.

“It really was a great effort by Sam to get the ball to the end line and make a great cross. She deserves all the praise for making that goal happen,” winning coach Joe Towle noted.

It was Leland & Gray’s seventh consecutive victory to start the season.
