JAY PEAK — Lila Alexander broke out to lead a two-on-one breakaway and made a perfect pass to Axis Balsley-Petraska, whose overtime goal gave the Brattleboro girls varsity ice hockey team a 2-1 victory over North Country on Saturday.
"Great effort," said Colonels coach Linda Burke. "Many of us have been sick with colds and stomach bugs which made this win all the more sweet. Our defense — Tobin Lonergan, Max Yost and Juniper DiMatteo-Lapape — did an outstanding job today, controlling our blue line and moving the puck up ice."
Trailing 1-0 after a burial by North Country's Skylar Robert, Lonergan scored the equalizer at the 11:39 mark of the third period. Edie Cay and Elizabeth Day set that goal up.
"With NC's Karey Champney in the penalty box for a bodycheck, Tobin Lonergan scored with a fierce slap shot from the point," noted coach Burke. "BUHS goalie Eliya Petrie played an outstanding game for us, making two key saves that kept us in the game."
BRATTLEBORO — Anthony Palomba scored for Brattleboro, assisted by Gabe Heiden, during a 4-1 loss to Burlington on Saturday. The winners finished with a 27-25 advantage in shots on goal. The Colonels will host Colchester on Monday at 3 p.m.
WESTMINSTER — Ryan Kelly and Shane Clark scored 26 and 11 points respectively to help Bellows Falls to a 66-46 rout of rival Springfield.
"We played intense tonight and I hope it continues," stated BF coach Ryan Stoodley, noting that the Terriers started the second half with an 18-7 run.
Bellows Falls (5-10) will host Green Mountain on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
In the Granite State, Hinsdale defeated Concord Christian 61-58 in overtime.
"We were cutting and passing really well out of the post. We had a lot of give and goes. Caleb Steever and Ryan Boggio were dishing the ball out all over," commented winning coach Carl Anderson.
Steever wound up with 10 points, eight rebounds, and nine assists. Boggio (16 points, 12 rebounds, 5 assists) and Peter McCosker (19 points, 5 rebounds, 5 steals) also had monster games for the Pacers.
WHITINGHAM — Gabriella Wardwell went off for 14 points and Hailey Perham added 13 of her own, leading Springfield past Twin Valley 58-26.
Tayler Courchesne paced the Wildcats with 10 points. Jarrett Niles and Maria Page followed with seven and six points respectively.
Courchesne then scored 14 points and pulled down eight boards for Twin Valley during a 45-33 loss to Leland & Gray.
