BRATTLEBORO - A 60-year-old man claiming he had come to town in support of public nudity was arrested Sunday for exposing himself to two young girls at the Brattleboro Food Co-op, Brattleboro police said.

The girls told police that at around 6 p.m. Sunday an older male took off his pants, opened his legs and exposed his genitals. They said he was smiling and trying to get their attention, according to police reports.

John W. Lockwood of West Palm Beach, Fla., was later arrested for lewd or lascivious conduct with a child. He was taken to the Brattleboro Police Department and jailed for lack of $5,000 bail.

Lockwood denied any lewd conduct, and will answer the lewd or lascivious charge in Vermont District Court in Brattleboro at a later date.
