9 starters return for Colonel girls
BRATTLEBORO — Midfielders Liz Day, Tobin Lonergan and Mollie Patenaude were named tri-captains for the Brattleboro varsity girls lacrosse team.
The Colonels will host Kearsarge, N.H. in Monday's season opener at 5:30 p.m.
"They have been working hard and have been focused, and the team is excited to start our season," mentioned Brattleboro coach Michael Lonergan.
Nine starters have returned for the Colonels, who fell to Middlebury 7-6 in a Division 1 semifinal last season. Day had a hat trick in that thriller.
It was a historic season for Brattleboro, which won a program-record 14 games, had its highest seed ever in a Division 1 Tournament (No. 2) and hosted a semifinal for the first time.
"Many players will be trying out new positions this year, and they are looking forward to taking on those challenges in order for us to have a successful season," noted the BUHS girls lax coach.
Eliya Petrie, who made seven saves versus Middlebury in the 2018 Final 4, is back between the pipes for the purple and white. Lucy Szpila, Lauryn Sargent and Sam Martin are defensive returnees, while Avalon Johnston, Bri Paul, Sophi Mikijaniec and Liv Romo are the team's top attackers.
