Area trio shines in martial arts tournament

BRATTLEBORO — Command Combat Sports owner Tj Russ competed in Saturday's New England Classics Tae kwon do tournament in Massachusetts along with his two students, Chloe and Daphne Banas of Guilford.

Russ won the Men's Black Belt Division and was the runner-up in the Men's Black Belt Grand Championship match. The winner of that event was Mike Buzby of Rouleau-Holley's Tae kwon do of Brattleboro.

Daphne Banas, 9, placed second in kata and third in fighting in the girls ages 9-10 class. Chloe Banas, also 9, took fourth in kata and fourth in fighting.

Russ, Daphne Banas and Chloe Banas will participate in the Survival of the Fittest Open Karate Championships, hosted by Shihan James Gadson, on Feb. 29 in Windsor, Conn.
