BHA girls team earns bronze medal

BRATTLEBORO — The Brattleboro Hockey Association's combined U12/U14 girls team took the ice in Woodstock at the Veterans Memorial Classic Tournament and claimed third place before the weekend of action was over.

The Hawks came out strong in their opener, defeating New Hampshire's Seacoast Spartans 4-1, with Juliana Miskovich notching a hat trick, Julie McDermid potting one goal and Willow Romo recording two assists. Bailey Houle and Lilly Carignan contributed to the effort on the second line, establishing a solid forecheck and backcheck.

In their second game of the day, the Hawks faced the Massachusetts Islanders, a formidable team that went on to win the tournament. The Islanders allowed only one goal over the course of the weekend, which came off the stick of Miskovich, who hit the twine, top corner. Goaltender Angela Jobin made save after save to keep Brattleboro in the game. Grace Szpila, Julie McDermid, Cady Sanchez and Mauren Ladzinski anchored the blue line, patrolling the defensive zone and the front of Jobin's net. The effort paid off as the Hawks advanced to Sunday's playoff round, downing the Hanover Wild in a back and forth overtime contest. Willow Romo scored the game-winning goal, securing a third place trophy for the Hawks.

At the Squirt level, the Brattleboro Blue Hawks were able to secure their second victory of the season, defeating the Ludlow Lions 3-2 at Withington Arena. Kaleb Betit sparked the victory, collecting his the first goal of the season, three minutes into the first period. Goalie Nick Fortier posted a phenomenal performance between the pipes, keeping the Hawks in the game when it was tied. Nicholas "the Seven" Conathan-Leach broke a 1-1 tie, scoring on a feed from Cohen Bassler. Ludlow tied the game again in the second period and the Blue Hawks were able to pull together a great team effort with defense from Grayson Loo, Bella Fortier and Mathew Lyford as Oakley McCarty, Jacob Ziegner, Zain Lent and Page Renaud kept the pressure on with many shots on goal. In the third period, Ludlow gave into the Hawks as Bassler scored on a breakaway, set up by a Talia Engel pass, to seal the Blue Hawks' victory.

The Squirt White Hawks played two games before the Greater Springfield League's Thanksgiving break. They skated to a 2-2 tie with the Westfield Bombers, with both goals coming off of Andy Cay's stick.

In their second game, Brattleboro fell to the Keene Cobras 5-3. Cay tallied twice and Evan Wright delivered with a top shelf wrister for the 5-3-1 Blue Hawks, who sit in second place in the tight GSL North standings.

Rec League Basketball

BRATTLEBORO — In women's hoops action at the Gibson-Aiken Center on Monday, Marina downed Austin Design 37-26 and Chroma defeated Houghton 44-20.

Ashley Clough and Rachel McGahie paced Marina with 15 and 10 points respectively. Bri Moore finished with eight points for Austin Design.

Whitney Allen pumped in 17 points to lead Chroma into the winners circle. Houghton's Kate Margaitis netted a dozen points of her own.
