Brattleboro 11s punch ticket to states
Sam Bogart threw five innings of one-run ball, striking out seven and allowing just three hits. Brattleboro got on the board early when Alex McClelland walked and scored on a Harper Cutler single. McClelland had two hits and two runs scored in the game. Cutler's hit was one of three on the day and he scored a run in the sixth. Cutler also pitched a scoreless sixth inning to close out the win.
In the second inning, Keagan Systo led off with a double deep into right field. Rowan Lonergan and Mason North followed with singles and later scored. Zach Corbeil walked and also scored. Brattleboro also got hits from John Satterfield (1-for-4, run) and Gabe Alexander (1-for-1, walk).
Brattleboro will next play in the state tournament at a time and location to be determined.
Brattleboro lost its first two contests against Bennington, falling 26-0 on Saturday and then 19-0 on Sunday.
Lucas Lamorder made several strong plays at third base for Brattleboro in the District 2 opener. Evan Batts, Gordie Kalill and Lucas Speno all got on base. After Bennington scored 12 runs in the first inning, Kalill exited the bullpen and allowed just one run over 1 1/3 innings.
Brattleboro's lone hit in Game 2 came off the bat of Donnevhan Hall, who singled into right field in the third inning. Speno (1B) and Silas Golding (2B) played solid defense.
Game 3 of the five-game series will take place in Bennington on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
Brattleboro ended up with the No. 2 seed in the District 2 Tournament after being defeated by Bennington 7-2 on Friday and beating Rutland 14-0 on Sunday.
Hurlers Degan Gundry, Troy Forkin, Brandon Weeks and Jackson Emery limited Bennington to six hits. In the third inning, Nick Gerard walked and scored on Willem Thurber's double. Tucker Sargent and Forkin chipped in with one hit each.
Sargent went 3-for-3, including a three-run homer, and drove in seven runs to lead Brattleboro's offense against Rutland on Sunday. Gundry contributed with a solo shot, while Will Hill, Will Miskovich, Charlie Clark and Ben Berg also had big hits for the winners. Brandon Weeks (5 K's) threw two dominant innings on the hill and reliever Karson Elliott fired a pair of scoreless innings.
No. 2 Brattleboro will host No. 3 Rutland in an elimination stage game on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The winner of that game will play at top-seeded Bennington on Thursday.
