Brattleboro 12s advance by beating Rutland

BRATTLEBORO — In the first elimination game of the 2018 Vermont District 2 finals, the No. 2 Brattleboro 12-year-old Little League All-Star baseball team shut out third-seeded Rutland in a rain-shortened game to win 8-0 on Tuesday night at the South Main Street field.

Brattleboro pitchers Charlie Clark (4 K's) and Troy Forkin (1 K) dominated the Rutland lineup and did not allow a hit.

Catcher Nick Gerard led the winners offensively with three hits and four RBI. Will Hill and Jackson Emery each contributed two hits and two runs scored. Forkin added a pinch-hit, two-run single in the second inning and Thomas Bell lofted an opposite field double in the third inning. Tucker Sargent also had a base hit for the hosts.

The defensive play of the game was a 3-6 double play started by first baseman Degan Gundry in the first inning.

This was Rutland's first year in the District 2 Tournament. While they struggled offensively, Ty Mackey (CF) and Chase de Castro (2B) each made fine defensive plays. Southpaw Tommy Jacques made the start for Rutland and struck out three batters across his three innings of work. Luca Polli caught all of the games in the series and showed strong skills at backstop.
