BRATTLEBORO — The Brattleboro Union High School varsity football team, which ran the table last fall, recently extended its impressive winning streak.

The Colonels received 57 percent of the votes in the multiple choice poll on the @ShaneCovey Twitter account to earn Team of the School Year honors.

BUHS went 8-0 during the regular season, rallying from a 19-point deficit to beat Bellows Falls in the opener and also defeating rival Mount Anthony Union to improve its record to 27-18 in the annual Elwell Trophy series.

During the playoffs, coach Chad Pacheco's team routed North Country 55-6, outscored Fair Haven 41-6, and then downed Bellows Falls 46-7 in the Division 2 title tilt to capture the program's first state championship since 1973.

The Bellows Falls girls cross-country team, which defended its Division 3 crown in the fall, is the runner-up in the poll with 19 percent of the votes. Abby Broadley finished first overall, Stephanie Ager placed fifth, Victoria Bassette took 14th, and Abby Dearborn was 16th as the Terriers edged silver medalist Rice by six points on the Thetford course.

After defeating Arlington 4-1 for all the marbles on the pitch, the Twin Valley varsity boys soccer team wound up third in the poll with 14 percent of the votes. Lucas Messing had a hat trick in the Division 4 state championship game.

The Brattleboro boys Nordic team finished fourth with 10 percent of the votes. Declyn Tourville, Sam Freitas-Eagan, Nolan Holmes and Henry Thurber powered the Colonels to a state championship sweep of the individual and relay races last winter.
