Brattleboro girls cruise on special night

BRATTLEBORO — Friday's annual Coaches Versus Cancer event raised $1,478, which crushed last year's total, and the Brattleboro varsity girls basketball team routed visiting Mill River 43-19.

"Very generous community that we are privileged to live in. Great turnout. The place was packed and I would say this was the loudest crowd we have had in a long time. It was great for the kids' spirits. Very inspiring," noted BUHS coach Paul Freed.

Rachael Rooney racked up a dozen points, four assists and three steals to pace the Colonels. Lauren McKenney (8 points, 6 rebounds) and super sub Natalie Hendricks (6 points, 4 offensive rebounds) also delivered.

"Our defense was excellent throughout, as they (Mill River) scored one basket in the first three quarters and just four for the game," stated Freed, who was pumped that his team ended up with 20 offensive rebounds.

The 8-8 Colonels will host rival Mount Anthony Union on Monday.
