Brattleboro softball team improves to 3-0

BRATTLEBORO — In the fantasy sports world, Hailey Derosia would be known as "a steal."

The senior scored an impressive 41 points, based on ESPN's standard league rules, when leading the Brattleboro Union High School varsity softball team to an 18-0 victory over Fair Haven on Tuesday at Sawyer Field.

"I thought Hailey threw well," said BUHS assistant coach Al Wood. "She was a little off in the first couple innings, but then she settled in. It was her second no-hitter and she has only given up one hit in three starts this season."

Derosia struck out 11, walked two and also hit two batters during her five innings of work. She went 3-for-4 at the plate, including a double and a two-run homer over the fence in left-center.

"We were hitting the ball well. We were taking good swings and making good contact," noted Wood.

The Colonels sent 11 batters to the plate in the first frame to take a quick 7-0 lead. Bella Powell's RBI triple to left was the biggest blow during the rally. Derosia doubled, while Lauren McKenney and Mya McAuliffe each delivered with a run-scoring single.

That had Fair Haven reliever Zoey Cole warming up behind her team's dugout. She would take over with one runner aboard in the second.

"This was the fastest pitching we've seen this season," Wood stated. "This is more of the speed we're used to. We were right on it."

The hosts tacked on three runs in the second, highlighted by Powell's RBI single to right field, to go ahead 10-0. They added a couple more runs in the third, thanks to singles by McAuliffe and Derosia.

"Hey Hailey! Hey Hailey! Woot, woot, yeah!" the BUHS players shouted from the dugout as Derosia stood on first base.

Derosia wowed the crowd in the bottom of the fourth, belting a two-run homer over the fence in left-center. McKenney and McAuliffe each singled during the six-run explosion.

The Slaters got their leadoff hitter on in the first three innings, but failed to score a run. Derosia then struck out the side in the fourth and also pitched a one-two-three fifth.

Brattleboro (3-0) will host rival Mount Anthony Union (0-1) on Thursday at 4 p.m.
