Broadley qualifies for XC Nationals

BRATTLEBORO — Bellows Falls Middle School student Abby Broadley placed eighth at the Super Regional cross-country race in Rhode Island, which qualified her for Nationals in Tallahassee, Fla.

Broadley was going up against runners from Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. She has the 21st fastest time in the country going into Nationals.

The talented endurance runner, who wears paint on her face during races to reflect her fearless attitude, previously placed sixth at the New England meet. She took 24th in the 3000 during the Nationals in Kansas during the spring.


BRATTLEBORO — Brattleboro Gymnastics will be hosting a Holiday Gymnastics Exhibition on Dec. 22 and Dec. 23 at the Brattleboro Recreation Center, located at 207 Main Street.

There will be three show times: Dec. 22 at 5 p.m., and Dec. 23 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The event will include various gymnastics and dance routines along with holiday music. The exhibition will serve as a fundraiser for the team's upper-level (level 6 plus) gymnasts as they travel to Florida Feb. 23-25 to compete in the 30th annual Gasparilla Classic in St. Petersburg, Fla. Eight of Brattleboro's gymnasts will be competing in the event. Baked goods will also be for sale during the exhibition, which will further support the Florida trip.

Tickets for the event are in high demand as space is limited. Pre-ordered tickets are $6 ($7 at the door) and children 3 and under are free. Rec Basketball

BRATTLEBORO — Rice defeated Southern Vermont Painting 69-36 and Southern Vermont Sprinkler outscored Brattleboro Subaru 83-50 in men's league basketball action at the Gibson-Aiken Center on Friday.

Rich Carrol, Larry Alper, Steve Kapral, Patrick Lallo, Jim Layer, Jim Nicholson, Tom Heydinger and Brian Mueller played lockdown defense for Rice, which got a team-high 16 points from Lallo. Joel Porter netted nine points to lead SVP.

Lynden Bunker and Ryan Haynes went off for 27 and 21 points respectively to power the Sprinklers. Corey Bauer pumped in 24 points for the dealership.
