Bronze lions found

BRATTLEBORO —The bronze lions guarding the entrance to The Vermont Building on Putney Road are on their way home.

On Monday, Shelly Huber, director of operations and building management at The Vermont Building, reported that two lions had been stolen. The lions had been in place at the building since it's opening in 1989.

A $1,000 reward was offered for help in locating them.

Huber said she received an anonymous tip about the location of the statues on Thursday. Scott Brooks Towing was sent to pick up the statues.

They were found in the local area, Huber said. She declined to comment about where specifically they were found. The investigation into who took the statues is on going.

"We are so appreciative of the efforts everyone made on behalf of our request to locate our lions." stated Robert Silver, owner of the building in a press release issued on Friday.

While this was the first theft on The Vermont Building, Huber said metal theft isn't uncommon. In 2012 Vermont passed a law to reduce stolen scrap-metal by ensuring that scrap-metal processors obtain and record details about sellers.

The Vermont building will be upping its security measures and securing the lions "in the best possible way," to prevent future thefts.

The Vermont Building has been home to many local businesses and organizations, such as Dr. Ambler Eye Care Center, United State Postal Office, Internal Revenue Service, Beck's Studio Hair Design, Green Mountain Skin Care, Edward Jones-Philip George, Southern Vermont Wellness, Bayada Home Health Hospice, Caring Chiropractor, Vermont Psychiatric Survivors, Social Security Disability Hearing Office, Attorney James Rodgers and David Reid and Center Balance by Suzan and other local businesses.
