BUHS boys to debut Monday

Posted
BRATTLEBORO — After failing to qualify for the playoffs for the first time in 45 years, this season's goal is obvious for the Brattleboro varsity boys basketball team.

"We're returning more experienced players than the previous year," noted BUHS coach Jason Coplan. "We will be more competitive than we were last year."

The Colonels will host Amherst in Monday's season opener at 7 p.m.

Adam Newton heated up down the stretch last winter, including a 17-point outing against Rutland. Tyler Millerick then went off for 19 points on Senior Night, helping the Colonels to a 58-54 victory over Hartford.

"Several players can shoot the 3," stated Coplan, referring to Charlie Galanes, Keegan Givens, Greg Fitzgerald and Newton. "Point duties will reside with Tyler Millerick, and newcomer Jaquan Knight is rapidly improving to contribute as well."

Seven players have returned from the BUHS team that also defeated Mill River and Woodstock last season. Those veterans are centers Gabe Packard and Hunter Beebe, forwards Grady Derosia and Jack Price, and guards Newton, Millerick and Galanes.

"The focus will be on defense and transition offense," said Coplan, adding that his team has had limited gym time. "Conditioning is a priority right now."

The Colonels will look inside to Beebe, Price, Packard and newcomer Charlie Staggers.

"Solid role players who are working hard for game minutes right now include senior Grady Derosia along with juniors Tyler Higley and Nick Aiken," mentioned the BUHS head coach.
