BRATTLEBORO — The Brattleboro Union High School varsity girls lacrosse team has nine starters back after going 8-9 last season.

The midfield will be a major strength for the purple and white, anchored by returnees Megyn Ayotte, Liz Day, and Sam Cragin. Ayotte and Day were both First Team Marble Valley League and All-State selections a year ago. Ayotte has already signed a letter of intent to play lax at Franklin Pierce University and Day was her team's leading scorer in 2017, while Cragin brings valuable ball possession and scoring skills.

Ball handler Tobin Lonergan, who ranked second on the team in scoring in 2017, leads the Brattleboro attackers. Forward Olivia Romo is known for her stick skills and scoring ability, while Molly Patenaude is a solid and reliable supporting player.

The team's biggest change will be in the back end after three defenders graduated. Senior tri-captain Liv Stent is being asked to set the tone on D, where she will be joined by Lucy Szpila, Lauryn Sargent, and goalie Eliya Petrie.

The Colonels will open up at Kearsarge on Tuesday night at 7.
