BRATTLEBORO — After losing to Kearsarge 10-9 in the season opener on Wednesday, the Brattleboro Union High School varsity girls lacrosse team bounced right back with a 17-15 win over Woodstock the following day.

"Our defense was very solid throughout the game, especially the play of Lucy Szpila and Grace Szpila. They both repeatedly denied the Woodstock attackers, prevented shots, and caused turnovers," said BUHS coach Michael Lonergan about Thursday's victory.

Liz Day exploded for six goals to pace the Colonels in the win. Tobin Lonergan and Brianna Paul each finished with a hat trick, while Avalon Johnston pitched in with one tally.

In the opener, Amy Wilson went off for four goals to propel Kearsarge.

"Our first time on the field revealed things that we really need to work on. However, we had some good defensive stances and our attack created good scoring chances. The players made a strong effort at the very end and won the ball back which allowed a few strong scoring chances to tie it up, but we fell short," noted the BUHS coach.

Liv Romo (3 goals), Lonergan (4 goals) and Day (2 goals, 3 assists) did the damage for the 1-1 Colonels, who will host Northampton on Monday at 4 p.m.
