BUHS Nordic teams aiming for podium again

BRATTLEBORO — It will be a tough act to follow for the Brattleboro Union High School boys and girls Nordic ski teams, which defended their Marble Valley League titles and then took second behind Mount Mansfield in the Division 1 state meet last season.

"The Brattleboro Nordic team is looking forward to a competitive season. Being on snow this early in the season is a real treat," said Colonels coach Amanda Dixon. "MAU is going to be very strong this year, which is great because the stronger they are the stronger we have to be to beat them. This dynamic sets us up well for when we face the northern schools at states."

Seniors Evan Koch and Galen Fletcher are the captains of the BUHS boys team. At the state meet last season, Koch finished 15th in the freestyle and 19th in classical while Fletcher wound up 23rd and 24th respectively in those events.

Also returning for the purple and white are Henry Thurber, Sam Freitas-Eagan, Orion Stone, Nolan Holmes, Ty Allembert and Declyn Tourville. Skiers to watch are freshmen Tenzin Mathes and Magnus vonKrusenstiern, according to Dixon.

The Colonels will certainly miss Isaac Freitas-Eagan, who won back-to-back individual freestyle and classic gold medals before taking his talents to Williams College.

The captains for the BUHS girls team are seniors Liz Morse and Angelika Toomey. At last season's state meet, Morse ended up 16th in freestyle and Toomey took 25th in classic.

Sarah Gallagher, who placed eighth in both events, leads a strong group of returnees that also consists of Elery Loggia, Bella Takacs, Alexandra Miskovich, Neveah Beauchamp and Lily Tessitore. Big things are also expected from sophomores Alina Secrest and Hazel Wagner.

The biggest ski boots to fill will be those of Bella Thurber, who teamed up with Takacs, Loggia and Gallagher for Division 1 state relay silver last winter.

The BUHS Nordic teams will debut at Prospect on Dec. 15 at 10 a.m. The first home meet for the Colonels is scheduled for Jan. 23 at 3 p.m. at VABEC.
