WOODFORD — Just as the afternoon's blizzard wound down, the boy's varsity Nordic racers wound up. Starting two at a time, every 15 seconds, there was ripe opportunity to duel over the 6 kilometer course at Prospect Mountain on Wednesday. BUHS's Henry Thurber won the race by 16 seconds, but was only able to shake his MAU rival Charlie Dobson in the final meters of the course. Nolan Holmes was next for the Colonels, finishing in 4th place, just ahead of Declyn Tourville who placed 5th. Sam Freitas-Eagan earned 7th place and helped Brattleboro win the day with a team score of 17.

The racing action then became girl powered. MAU's Sarah Umphlett skated around the course in a swift time of 20:34 to win the race. Although MAU had both Umphlett and Maggie Payne in the top three, sandwiching BBA's Leah Mowry, BUHS showed their strength and depth by taking 4th-7th place: Sylvie Normandeau in 4th, Bella Takacs in 5th, Ava Whitney in 6th, and Lily Tessitore in 7th. The deciding skiers in the girls' race were the 5th finishers for BUHS and MAU. Hazel Wagner, in 11th, clinched the win for the Colonels, making a team score of 33 to MAU's 34.

This was the third race of the season for the southern tier schools. Already BUHS and MAU have traded places on the boys side, and on the girls side BBA has gotten into the mix. It's going to continue to be an exciting season with all the teams pushing one another, and in the process getting stronger and stronger.
