Career Center students honored


BRATTLEBORO — The Windham Regional Career Center held its Honors Evening on June 11 at the American Legion.

The celebration was in honor of the Center's National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) inductees and scholarship winners. Welcome and opening remarks were made by Nancy Wiese who was filling in for Ray Dunn, WRCC Director; Lyle Holiday, Superintendent of the Windham Southeast Supervisory Union; and Bob Woodworth, chairperson of the Regional Advisory Board. Guest speaker was Alex Beck, workforce and education program manager with the Brattleboro Development Credit Corporation.

Following a buffet prepared by Justin Thompson at the Legion, eight WRCC students were inducted into the National Technical Honor Society. Maribeth Cornell, NTHS advisor and instructor of business classes, introduced each inductee while sharing highlights about their skills and accomplishments and future plans. Once introduced, a candlelight ceremony explaining the seven qualities of NTHS members was held, followed by official induction words. The 2019 inductees are: Makayla LaFlam, Audrey LaMorder, Sheridan Lewis, Lexi Miner, Jenna Murrow, Paige Starkweather, Gus Williams and Luke Williams.

The evening concluded with the presentation of scholarships and awards, listed below:

Eleanor Thomas presented the Thomas Family Scholarship to Meghan Forrett. Mari Cornell presented The Brattleboro Savings & Loan Scholarship in Donna Rathbun's absence to Meghan Forrett. Dan Deitz presented the Brattleboro Sunrise Rotary Scholarship to Josh Nordheim. Mary Jane Penfield presented the Brattleboro Sunrise Penfield Scholarship to Meghan Forrett. Mari Cornell presented the Presidential Scholar Award to Meghan Forrett. Gene Whitney presented The Ernest Flagg Scholarship to Zachary Dunbar-Buckley; Jim Valliere, Automotive instructor, presented four awards. The Twin State Trucking Award to Cameron King, Performance Motors Award to Teresa Derosia, Automotive Technology Award to Chris Deitz and the NAPA Award to Bobby Phillips. The Brattleboro Freemasons Scholarship was presented by Worshipful Master Rob Baldauf and Senior Warden Kris Johnston to Makayla LaFlam. Anne Doran presented the Kiwanis Club of Brattleboro Scholarship in Kathy Ellor's absence to Makayla LaFlam. John DiMatteo, Construction Trades instructor, presented The Raymond Harrington Award to Brenden Gilbeau. Brenda Seitz presented the Lions Club Vocational/Trade Award to Zach Dunbar-Buckley. The Greg Baird Award was presented by Linda Quay to Tyler Sarringer. Duane Young presented the Brent Young Award to Makayla LaFlam; Errold Nelson, Forestry instructor, presented the James Brown Memorial Fund Award to Makayla LaFlam. Amy Anthony presented the MikeRoweWORKS Scholarship to Gavin Sullivan and Sheridan Lewis. Anne Doran presented the Vermont Honors Scholarship to Amelia Graff. Nancy Wiese presented the James Cusick Memorial Award to Makayla LaFlam. The William Dennen Overall WRCC Outstanding Student award also presented by Nancy Wiese was presented to Makayla LaFlam.
