Celebrate the unfurling of the ferns

DUMMERSTON — An "Unfurling of the Ferns" celebration will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 19, at Dutton Pines State Park on Route 5. It is co-sponsored by the Vermont Dept of Forests, Parks and Recreation and the Dummerston Conservation Commission.

Author and forester Lynn Levine and illustrator Briony Morrow-Cribbs will be available to discuss ferns.

At 2 p.m., Vermont Timbre (Amelia Struthers & Mike Mrowicki). will perform their music.

At 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 p.m., State Forester Tim Morton will discuss the history and forest community of Dutton Pines, taking people on short walks around the park.

Attendees will be encouraged to explore the park with Levine's newly published field guide, "Identifying Ferns the Easy Way: A Pocket Guide to Common Ferns of the Northeast." There will be a "Fern Treasure Hunt" for anyone looking for a fun challenge.

Twenty percent of all sales of the reduced price fern guides during this event will be donated to the Dummerston Conservation Commission to support ongoing environmental education efforts. Vermont Timbre's new CD, "Songs to Light the Way," as well as their other CD's, will be available for sale.

Admission is free and free light refreshments will be provided.
