Colonel boys prevail at Prospect Mountain

WOODFORD — Henry Thurber placed second to lead the Brattleboro Union High School varsity boys Nordic team to a gold medal in the skate portion of the Southern Vermont League championship meet on Tuesday at Prospect Mountain.

Nolan Holmes (5th), Sam Freitas-Eagan (6th) and Declyn Tourville (8th) rounded out the scoring for the Colonels, who beat rival Mount Anthony Union 18-22 for all the marbles.

Woodstock's Justice Bessette easily won the individual title in a time of 18:54.

In the girls heat, Brattleboro finished third with 33 points — behind MAU (20 points) and Burr and Burton (25 points). MAU's Sarah Umphlett finished first overall in 23:37.

Sylvie Normandeau placed third to pace the Colonel girls.

The classic portion of the SVL championship meet will take place next week at Wild Wings in Londonderry.

Brattleboro Boys Basketball

BRATTLEBORO — Charlie Galanes and Gabe Packard scored 26 and 21 points respectively as the Colonels trounced Burr and Burton 69-43 on Tuesday.

Greg Fitzgerald and Trinley Warren each added seven points for the purple and white (10-5).

Madox Mathews paced the 5-10 Bulldogs with 14 points.

Twin Valley Boys Basketball

ARLINGTON — Jack McHale scored a dozen points to lead the Wildcats past Arlington 46-24 on Tuesday.

Kolby Wilkins pumped in 16 points for the Eagles.

The 13-1 Wildcats will play at White River Valley on Friday at 7 p.m.

Hinsdale Boys Basketball

MANCHESTER, N.H. — The host Derryfield varsity boys basketball team defeated the Pacers 64-52 Tuesday.

There were 172 total points scored when these teams faced off earlier in the season.

Greg Howard led the Pacers with 12 points. Arth Patel chipped in with 11.

"Jason Cowan had a great night for the Pacers. The kid is all hustle and we needed that extra energy tonight," noted Hinsdale coach Carl Anderson.

The Pacers will head to Portsmouth Christian Academy on Friday.
