BRATTLEBORO — Lucy Szpila scored her first varsity goal, on a left-handed drive, to help the Brattleboro Union High School girls lacrosse team to an easy 21-5 win over visiting Northampton on Monday.

"We were able to control this game very early on, which enabled us to work on our attack. As the game progressed, we focused on our offensive movement and feeding cutters moving through the middle. A variety of players stepped up and scored today. Several players were also able to try out different positions, which makes us more versatile in the long run," said BUHS coach Michael Lonergan, whose team improved to 2-1 overall.

Liz Day (6 goals and 4 assists), Tobin Lonergan (4 goals and 2 assists), Mollie Patenaude (3 goals and 1 assist) and Liv Romo (3 goals) were all in a zone for the Colonels. Bri Paul tallied twice, while Avalon Johnston and Sophi Mikijaniec added one goal each. Lauryn Sargent contributed with an assist.

Elly MacDonald scored all five of Northampton's goals.

The Colonels will host Hartford on April 24 at 7 p.m.
