Colonel girls to begin at Missisquoi

BRATTLEBORO — Senior tri-captains Olivia Stent, Jamie Mahoney and Axis Balsley-Petraska have a chance to lead the Brattleboro Union High School varsity girls ice hockey team to its first winning season since 2012.

"We have a solid core group this year and the players have been working hard. They are excited and enthusiastic," stated BUHS coach Linda Burke, whose team will open up at Missisquoi Valley on Dec. 16 at 6 p.m.

The Colonels went 6-13-1 last season, including a 1-0 loss to Woodstock in a Division 2 quarterfinal.

"With the graduation of Keagan Jameson, the starting goalie position is up for grabs between Eliya Petrie and Jade Bruneau," noted Burke.

The team also graduated star defenders Sarah LaPorte and Hannah Curiss, meaning Elizabeth Day, Max Yost, Juniper DiMatteo-LePape and Tobin Lonergan will be counted on to keep the pressure off of Petrie and/or Bruneau.

"Our incoming freshmen class looks good so far," remarked Burke. "We appreciate the hard work of coach Elizabeth McLarney of the Brattleboro Youth Hockey Association in developing these young players."

Brattleboro's annual Pink at the Rink game will be played at Memorial Park on Jan. 20 at 4:45 p.m. The event raises funds for patients with cancer who are being treated at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital.
