Colonels to debut in Townshend Tourney

Posted
BRATTLEBORO — The top two scorers from last season have returned for the Brattleboro varsity girls basketball team, which lost to North Country in a Division 1 quarterfinal and finished up with an 11-11 mark.

Junior guard Rachael Rooney led the Colonels in points as a sophomore. Hailey Derosia, who was second on the team in scoring, ranked first in rebounds, assists and steals last winter.

"We have a lot of quickness and athleticism among us. We will, as is our trademark, get after teams on defense and try to push the ball up the floor in transition. We will need to improve our rebounding to make this work," stated BUHS coach Paul Freed.

Derosia finished with 15 points to lead the way against North Country in her final game as a junior. Rooney followed with seven points in that quarterfinal, while Julie Hendricks and Alyssa Scherlin each added four points.

"Offensively, we will be patient in the half court, share the sugar, and work to get a high percentage shot. We have several good shooters," mentioned coach Freed. "I am very excited for our journey together this season."

It will begin in Leland & Gray's Tip Off Tournament, with a game against Burr and Burton on Friday night at 6. Arlington and the hosts Rebels will then face off at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday in Townshend, the consolation game will be played at 3 p.m. and then the title tilt will start at 7 p.m.

At the conclusion of Saturday's games, an All Tournament Team will be selected and awards will be presented.
