Concerts at Yellow Barn launch season
On Tuesday, June 19, at 8 p.m., the New York-based JACK Quartet, "superheroes of the new music world," according to the Boston Globe, will perform a special concert of works by Ferneyhough, Lim, Carter, Feldman, and Williams. Winners of Lincoln Center's Martin E. Segal Award, New Music USA's Trailblazer Award, and the CMA/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, JACK Quartet (Christopher Otto, Austin Wulliman, violins; John Pickford Richards, viola; and Yellow Barn alumnus Jay Campbell, cello) has performed to critical acclaim throughout the United States and abroad. According to the Washington Post, JACK is "the go-to quartet for contemporary music, tying impeccable musicianship to intellectual ferocity and a take-no-prisoners sense of commitment." Tickets are $20, $17 for seniors, and $10 for students.
June also brings four performances by musicians in Yellow Barn's Young Artists Program. Each summer Yellow Barn invites young professional musicians from around the world to explore and perform over 80 works of chamber music, spanning a wide range of eras and genres, alongside faculty members who are among the most highly regarded performers and pedagogues of our time. This year 27 outstanding young instrumentalists (strings, winds, piano, and percussion) and seven composers will travel to Putney from across the United States and abroad to spend three weeks exploring treasured works from the chamber music canon, as well as new works composed during the program. Their concert series begins on Sunday, at 4 p.m., with seven world premiere performances of works by Young Artists Program (YAP) composers presented by their performer colleagues. Tickets for this performance are $10, $9 seniors, and $5 students. At the conclusion of this 90-minute performance, audience members are invited to talk with YAP performers and composers.
On Wednesday, at 8 p.m., YAP participants will perform a free concert for the community, including works by Andersson, Burtner, Crumb, Debussy, Korngold, Messiaen, and Shostakovich. Two additional performances conclude the month on June 28, and 29 at 8 p.m., featuring the new works by YAP composers alongside works by Bart k, Beethoven, Brahms, Cage, Mendelssohn, and Schubert. Reservations are recommended for this concert. Patrons can reserve their tickets by calling the box office at 802-387-6637, by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org, or by visiting yellowbarn.org.
The season's Opening Night Concert is on July 6, at 8 p.m., and will also feature the JACK Quartet in The Big Barn. Tickets are $30, seniors $25, and students $15.
