Council hosts series on Iran

BRATTLEBORO — For the second time, Windham World Affairs Council will be at 118 Elliot to launch a series that pairs film and food with great speakers and cultural events to illuminate a country and its culture.

In the autumn of 2016 its "Understanding Cuba Through Film" series was a resounding success and attendees were asking for more events of this type. Now, one year later, on Sept. 15, WWAC is ready to follow up with a new initiative, "Understanding Iran Through Film."

The series begins with a dinner at 6 p.m. by RSVP and donation, followed at 7 p.m. by a talk entitled "Introduction to Iranian Cinema," which is free and open to the public.

The speaker will be Dr. Ida Meftahi, a visiting Professor in Contemporary Iranian Culture and Society at the Roshan Institute for Persian Studies, University of Maryland. Her historical research intersects with studies of gender, urbanism, performance, cinema, and political economy of public entertainment. In her presentation she will show and discuss some clips representative of Iranian film that help the audience increase their understanding of Iranian society and culture.

The suggested minimum dinner donation $1. To RSVP, email
