Ferencz, Covey, Paasche, Parmelee win Fun Run races

BRATTLEBORO — In her first road race of the year, Jackie Ferencz prevailed in the one-mile heat in a time of 9:54 at the fifth Fun Run of the summer on Wednesday evening. Known for the red, white and blue clothing she donned in last year's Firecracker 4-Miler, she said she is considering running in the annual race again on Thursday.

Vernon's Fred Ross, who recently entered the Mount Washington Road Race Hall of Fame, entered the two-mile race and ended up third in 25:51. Shane Covey finished first in 17:42 and was followed home by Raji Ballou in 19:16, with timer Donna Smyth cheering them both on.

A handful of people signed up for the three-miler, despite the heat and humidity. The order of finish looks like this: Pete Paasche (21:05), Conor O'Donnel (21:43), Tony Blofson (24:15), Linda O'Donnel (27:33), and Leo Schiff (29:56).

In the 2.5-mile trail run, Caitlyn Parmelee cruised to victory in a time of 24:45. Also reaching the podium were runner-up Lester Humphreys in 25:41 and bronze medalist John Duff in 29:29.

Meanwhile, series regular Serge Pouliot was spotted running a route in Hinsdale, N.H. to prepare for Keene's annual 4th of July race.

The free Fun Runs are directed by Gary and Chris Montgomery. The next one will be held on July 10 at 6:30 p.m., starting near the entrance to the Brattleboro Country Club.

The annual Bill Powers Memorial Firecracker 4-Miler road race will start at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday at Living Memorial Park and end at the Brattleboro Town Common. Preregistration ($10 for ages 18 and under, or $15 for adults) ends on Wednesday at 5 p.m., or you can register on race day from 8-9:15 a.m. at $15 for ages 18 and under, or $25 for adults.
