Finance director stays a little longer

BRATTLEBORO — John O'Connor isn't leaving just yet.

"While we were unsuccessful in our first search for a new finance director," Town Manager Peter Elwell said during the Select Board meeting Tuesday, "we plan to do an additional search in the new year. But I'm happy to report that John is going to stay on."

O'Connor, who has been town treasurer and finance director since 2011, anticipated stepping down this month. He turned 70 in September and planned to retire.

Elwell said the town "looked at some alternatives for how to bridge to the new person, and John has agreed instead that he'd like to stay on and provide the continued stewardship of the financial operations during our transition ..."

O'Connor is expected to retire sometime next year.

With two members absent from the meeting, the board will pick up several budget items at a meeting at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday. The list includes a multi-jurisdictional opioids lawsuit, the Brattleboro Community Marketing Initiative, the town's proposed fiscal year 2021 budget, and the Downtown Brattleboro Alliance annual work plan, budget and Representative Town Meeting article.
