Gaspero-Beckstrom earns leadership award

BURLINGTON — Giannina Gaspero-Beckstrom of Guilford has been presented with the 2019 Patrick M. Brown Leadership Award, in recognition of achievements, accomplishments and contributions to the University of Vermont community as a leader and pioneer.

The award is presented to a student who has been involved in a variety of activities, but has not necessarily held formal leadership positions. It recognizes a person who rarely receives recognition for their work "behind the scenes," but has demonstrated great dedication and dependability — earning the respect of others on campus.

In their nomination of Gaspero-Beckstrom, the nominators wrote: "Giannina joined UVM BORED (a student-run organization that markets events happening on- and off-campus) in September 2017. She stood out to us for her intense love of climbing trees and her intense hatred for 'blue foods' - and in that moment it was clear we had to work with her. In the three years since, she has risen the ranks to become our 'team lead.' And lead she has — for a year and a half! In an organization such as UVM BORED, which exists 'behind the scenes' and behind a computer, she has grown in so many ways — overseeing a team of five, leading with intentionality, care, and curiosity — and providing rays of happiness to our campus from behind the gifs, pixels, pictures, and memes that get us through the school year."

Each year the Department of Student Life at the University of Vermont recognizes the achievements of several outstanding individuals in the form of the Student Life and Senior Awards. These awards are presented annually to students, clubs, organizations, and advisors to recognize outstanding campus leadership, contributions, and service towards the UVM community and beyond.
