Genocide studies lecture open to public

BRATTLEBORO — The community is invited to the School for International Training at 4 p.m. on Friday for a free talk by Dr. James Waller, Cohen Professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Keene State College in Keene, N.H.

Waller will present "Becoming Evil: How Ordinary People Commit Genocide and Mass Killing."

Waller is widely recognized for his work on intergroup relations and prejudice. He developed a study program, "Prejudice Across America," which drew national media attention and was named by President Clinton's Initiative on Race as one of America's Promising Practices for Racial Reconciliation. Many of the experiences from the study program are chronicled in Waller's first two books, "Face to Face: The Changing State of Racism Across America" and "Prejudice Across America."

Waller also developed an international study program, "Peace and Conflict in Northern Ireland," which allows students to explore the origins of and responses to intergroup conflict and violence in Northern Ireland.

Waller was one of 16 national recipients of the Pew Fellowship Award to continue his work on the psychology of human evil. In June 2007, he received the First Voice Humanitarian Award from the Chicago Center for Urban Life & Culture in recognition of his work connecting students with urban communities in need. In November 2011, Waller was recognized by a California Senate resolution for "his tireless efforts to end genocide."

He serves on the board of the Journal for the Study of Anti-Semitism, as an editor-in- chief for Genocide Studies and Prevention, and is an honorary member of the International Expert Team of the Institute for Research of Genocide Canada.

This event is free and open to the public.
