Going the Distance ride is June 22

BRATTLEBORO — The 10th annual Going the Distance (GTD) ride for the Boys & Girls Club of Brattleboro will be held on Saturday, June 22, and this is the 20th year that the Club has provided great after school and summer programs for the youth of our community.

The GTD started in 2010. Eight riders fundraised for the Club by riding 200 miles from the Canadian border in Derby Line to Brattleboro in two days. Some of them had never ridden 100 miles a day, let alone riding two back-to-back 100 mile days. The group planned the route, had support drivers and a few local sponsors who covered the minimal expenses. The weather was hot, though everyone had a great time together knowing they were riding to support an important local organization. The next year, eight riders repeated the same route, and the first two GTD rides each raised about $20,000 for the Club.

In 2012, the Club decided to attract more riders by changing the format to a one-day event and offering three interconnected scenic routes of 40, 60 and 100 miles that started and finished in Brattleboro. They planned great rest stops every 20 miles, with drinks and snacks, a catered lunch for the longer rides and an after-ride party for all riders.

These local, one-day rides have attracted 50-60 riders each year. Over 175 riders have done the GTD at least once, while many have ridden five or six times or more. Since 2012, the GTD has raised $45,000 or more each year. Since the expenses are low and easily covered by generous local businesses, all the money raised by the riders goes directly to support the Club's programs. Over the years, the GTD has raised more than $360,000 for the Club.

It's now time to dust off your bike, oil the chain, pump up the tires and start getting ready for this year's GTD ride.
