BRATTLEBORO — A Senior Softball League game is played every Tuesday on the lower field at Memorial Park from 9:30-11 a.m., with the season ending when temps drop below 50 degrees at that time.

"Don't write the rules down, they change every week. Today, we came up with a double play rule," said Vince Schuck, of Newfane, on Sept. 10.

The league isn't just for seniors, as Oscar Heller has been joining in since he was 27. Women are welcome, too.

"There's no shortage of good humor and laughs," commented photographer Kelly Fletcher. "And let me tell you, these guys can hit."

A 9-on-9 game is ideal, but the players still made it work when only nine players showed up last week. They usually use ghost runners, but during the summer when school's out they bring along their grandchildren to run the bases.

"In softball, you stand around and stand around and then you run, and that's when you get hurt, so we skip that part," noted Schuck.
