BRATTLEBORO — Ed Lewicki wrote Colby Leary's name near the bottom of his lineup card on Tuesday night, for defensive purposes only.

The right fielder would eventually make his coach look like a genius.

Leary made an unbelievable running catch in deep right-center in the second inning, robbing Adam Newton of extra bases, as the Burr and Burton varsity baseball team held on for a 1-0 victory over Brattleboro on Tenney Field.

"That was quite a baseball game. I thought both pitchers did a very good job, but they were able to get the timely hit and we were not," said BUHS coach Chris Groeger.

Daniel Hatheway led off the game with a single to left, Chandler Pouk hit into a fielder's choice, Joey McCoy drew a walk, John Morgantini struck out, and then Blake Greene delivered a two-out single to center that put the Bulldogs ahead 1-0.

BBA's John Rodriguez and Newton would dominate the rest of the way. "J-Rod" fanned four, walked zero and fired a two-hit shutout to get the win, while Newton struck out nine, walked five and gave up three hits.

"When he needed to, he was able to bear down and get outs for us. He was able to establish his breaking ball tonight," Groeger said of his starter.

Newton tried to help himself in the bottom of the second, however his shot to the gap in right-center was somehow run down by Leary. A bunt single later in the inning by Kris Carroll and a single by Tyler Millerick in the seventh accounted for the only two Brattleboro hits.

Zinabu McNeice (SS) finished with a team-high four assists for the hosts, with the last of those ending with a highlight scoop by Hunter Beebe (1B). Millerick (C) contributed defensively by throwing out Rodriguez on a delayed steal.

Newton retired the side in the third, fourth and fifth frames. He would walk a couple of batters and also give up a bloop single to Will Addington in the later innings.

"We've now lost twice to this team, so there's no shot for an MVL title. We'll now try to get a home playoff game," Groeger mentioned. "It's tough to lose seven seniors. We wanted to win the game for them on Senior Night."

The Colonels honored 12th graders Evan Finnell, Brenden Gilbeau, Jack Price, Jeremy Rounds, Beebe, Carroll and Newton prior to the contest.

Burr and Burton improved to 10-3 with the victory. Brattleboro (9-5) will play at Saint Johnsbury on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
