Hayward is Syracuse captain
BRATTLEBORO — Peter-Owen Hayward of Brattleboro was selected as captain of the 2019-2020 Syracuse University men's ice hockey team. After serving the previous two seasons as alternate captain for the Orange, Hayward was tapped with the responsibility to lead the team as the program celebrates its 60th anniversary season and it goes through a rebuilding process after loosing half its team to graduation and early-season injuries.
The Orange captured the Eastern States Collegiate Hockey League Playoff Championship last season with a gritty, heart stopping performance that involved winning three come-from-behind, overtime performances and earned them the moniker "The Cardiac Kids" from their fans.
Hayward, a four-year player, finished the first half of this season as Syracuse's leading goal scorer. Leading the team in scoring since his freshman year, Hayward is also the program's all-time career points leader.
Hayward has been on the Dean's List since his freshman year and will graduate in May with degrees from the Whitman School of Management and the Newhouse School of Communication.
Prior to his tenure at Syracuse University, Hayward was a part of several Brattleboro Youth Hockey Association championship teams, the Springfield Rifles U-18 Massachusetts State Champions, and played for Northfield Mount Hermon and the Junior Bruins.
