Hilltoppers outscore Brattleboro girls on court

BRATTLEBORO — Josie Choiniere exploded for 18 points, including four trifectas, as the Saint Johnsbury varsity girls basketball team topped Brattleboro 46-23 on Friday evening.

Maren Nitsche added 16 points for the defending Division 1 champions.

Rachael Rooney and Jessica Tatro each scored six points for the Colonels (2-3). Alyssa Scherlin ended up with four points.

Brattleboro will play at Windsor on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Boys Basketball

RUTLAND — Maddox Traynor made a couple of clutch free throws down the stretch to give Rutland a 47-46 win over visiting Brattleboro on Friday evening.

Traynor scored a team-high 14 points for the winners, including a couple of makes from downtown.

The 2-3 Colonels will play at Windsor tonight at 7.

Epping came back from six points down in the last eight minutes to beat Hinsdale 64-62 on Friday night at the Stable. Dylan Harden (26 points) and Greg Howard (17 points) had the hot hands for the 0-4 Pacers, who will host Sunapee on Tuesday.

Matt Dunn had 10 points and seven boards for Leland & Gray during Saturday's 52-34 loss to Poultney. Liam Towle, Matt Emerson and Dunn all netted nine points for the Rebels in Thursday's 62-45 loss to Arlington. Towle (20 points, 8 rebounds) and Dunn (13 points, 5 rebounds) did the damage when the Townshend team fell to West Rutland 63-59.

Boys Hockey

WOODSTOCK — Woodstock tallied three times in the opening period on Saturday and held on for a 3-1 victory over visiting Brattleboro.

Nathan Powers got the Colonels on the board with 7:06 remaining in the contest, assisted by Jack Pattison and Mason Foard. BUHS goalies Austin Wood (18 saves) and Darek Harvey (10 saves) split time in net.

Brattleboro (4-2-1) will play at U-32 on Wednesday at 4:45 p.m.

Girls Basketball

WHITINGHAM — Twin Valley was defeated by West Rutland 52-19 on Saturday.

Jayden Crawford and Sadie Boyd each scored seven points to lead the hosts. Kate Longe chipped in with one point and eight rebounds.

The 1-3 Wildcats will play at Mid-Vermont Christian tonight at 7.

Gymnastics

BRATTLEBORO — The Brattleboro Recreation & Parks Department will hold another session of gymnastics classes at the Gibson-Aiken Center. Session III of gymnastics classes will begin Jan. 20 and run through March 21. The cost of this eight-week program is $80 for Brattleboro residents and $95 for non-residents. No classes will be held Feb. 17-22. Late registrations will be pro-rated. Classes are running Mondays-Saturdays for ages 18 months and up.
