GREENFIELD, Mass. — The Vermont man who died while being detained in the Franklin County Jail and House of Correction was identified Wednesday as Ian Biercuk, 35, of Jamaica, Vt.

The Franklin County Sheriff's Department said Biercuk was found unresponsive during a cell check Saturday. He was taken to Baystate Franklin Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Sheriff Christopher Donelan said Biercuk appears to have died of a drug overdose, and the death is not considered suspicious. Next of kin has been notified.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the official cause of death.

Massachusetts State Police had arrested Biercuk on narcotics-related offenses earlier in the day, according to information from the Northwestern District Attorney's Office in Northampton, Mass.
