Kaynor featured at Dummerston contra dance

DUMMERSTON — An evening of community contra dances will take place at the Evening Star Grange in Dummerston Center on Saturday from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

The music will be led by David Kaynor of Montague, Massachusetts. Kaynor has contributed immeasurably to the community dance scene in our area as a fiddler, composer, mentor and dance leader. He will be accompanied by Becky Hollingsworth on piano, and musicians are invited to sit in with the band.

Kaynor founded the series of dances that continue to this day at the Guiding Star Grange in Greenfield, Massachusetts. His calling and music have served for many decades to draw people to contra dance as a vigorous and inspiring social activity.

Andy Davis and Louisa Engel will be calling the dance.

Other dances in this series will take place on May 18 and June 15. All dances take place at the Evening Star Grange in Dummerston Center and always feature live traditional music performed by local musicians and callers.

Prior dance experience is not necessary, as all the dances are taught. All ages and abilities are welcome. There will be a potluck supper before the dance at 5:30 p.m.

The program includes traditional New England contra dances, square dances, circle mixers and couple dances. Admission is $5 for children, $8 for adults and $20 for families.
